Kumarakom will celebrate its National Tourism Award (2008-09) for Best Responsible Tourism Project tomorrow (6th April 2010). The program will be inaugurated by the Tourism Minister Sri Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. VN Vasavan (MLA) will chair the proceedings and Jose K Mani (MP, Kottayam) will deliver the keynote speech.
Program begins at 4 pm by the Cultural rally from SKM maiden to SK Mini Ground.
Responsible Tourism makes Kumarakom a paradise of revenue making jobs. Through small scale production and sale of traditional crafts and other ethnic products, native people make profits for their livelihood. Thus Responsible Tourism focuses on the economic participation of local people as direct owners in the business of tourism not just as beneficiaries of charity. Local self bodies also succeeded in concentrating profit oriented production and sales at Kumarakom.
Kerala Tourism won the ‘Best Responsible Tourism Project’ award, which went to Kumarakom Gramapanchayat, located in Kottayam district of Kerala. Kumarakom is a well-known backwater destination in Kerala where the practice of Responsible Tourism, being implemented at the initiative of Kerala Tourism is now going on in full swing, to the delight of the stakeholders and the local community.
